1. Opening Address

Student Ambassadors from Science Pioneers were invited to deliver the opening speech at the ASE conference, introducing the 2024 theme ‘Building Science Capital’. We introduced our program with a summary of activities in front of an audience of around 150 delegates, composed of primary and secondary science educators and technicians from 37 international schools across Southeast Asia, aiming to provide inspiration on how to foster a passion for science within their own student communities. After the speech, we helped the delegates navigate the school and assisted with logistics to ensure their workshops ran smoothly.

2. Student-led Workshop

Science Pioneers hosted a student-led workshop where we shared, in-depth, our experience in starting up the program and what we had learned along the process – from crafting our own lesson plans to collaborating with the school’s technicians to prepare materials for our experiments each week and achieving our priority of keeping the junior students engaged during our sessions. We answered any questions the delegates had about the program and granted them full access to our archive of lesson plans and experiment details.

3. Dissection Class

The members of Science Pioneers also enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the delegates’ workshops. One particular highlight was exploring neuroscience through a brain dissection. We were able to fully appreciate the fascinating complexity of the brain by performing hands-on dissection on a pig’s brain, during which we observed its intricate structures and their distinctive functions. In another workshop, we performed a dissection a pig’s heart, further honing our skills. These workshops gave us the chance to network with experienced educators and technicians, exchanging ideas and gaining valuable insights into effective science teaching methods. The classes left us inspired and eager to apply what we learned to our own program.
